Happy Easter!

My mum sent me this awesome video about coloring eggs with silk neckties so we just HAD to try it. I have to say, it was much easier, a lot cleaner, and the result is AWESOME.

It took:

a dozen WHITE eggs
6 neckties - silk and the more colorful/brighter, the better
white cotton (we used muslin scraps from other projects)
string
4 c. water
1/4 c. white vinegar

Here's the awesome video from the SALT project that gives the detailed directions.

Supplies!!!

Make sure you get everything together before you start - have 12 squares cut from the neckties (large enough to cover an egg) and 12 squares cut from the muslin.

Wrap a square of silk necktie around an egg and tie the top with string.

Then wrap the string around the egg to hold it in place.

Wrap the egg in the white cotton square and secure it with some more string (or a rubber band). Set it carefully in the pot of water and vinegar. We were able to do this together as a family :) We only lost one egg!

All set in the pot of water and vinegar!
Bring the water to a boil and then let simmer for 30 minutes. Remove from heat and unwrap your eggs!

Our eggs turned out awesome! No dye on our fingers and plenty of pretty colors!!!

And if this project isn't enough to make your easter special, how about a mug of bunny....our newest family member...

Autumn's Intro

Hello!

My name is Autumn and I LOVE to read and write. My favorite genre is fantasy because I like to imagine the different characters or animals or whatever it is, in my head. I must say I really do hate the stuff they give us to do in school like read this or read that. For example, they made us listen to the worst book in the world, write about it(in the point of view of one of the stupid characters), then turn it in for a huge part of our reading/language arts grade, UGHHHHH!!!

I also play sports, am a girl scout, participate in a leadership group for school, craft and sew. Most people think I am sarcastic and funny and probably a few other things. I am passionate about animals; I LOVE all species and hope to become an exotic veterinarian when I grow up.

The final thing I would like to tell you is that when I write a blog I am going to give my true and honest opinion. If you don't agree with it, I would like to know what you think about the book in the comments. Wait! Ok, this is the final FINAL thing - we may have spoilers in some of the blog posts, so please skip over any segment labeled "SPOILER ALERT" if you don't want us to ruin any surprises.

That is all I have to say about it, so, BYE!!! :)

NEW Steampunk Mad Hatter Hat

Sooooo, out with the old and in with the new!  Something I've been busy working on is a new Mad Hatter costume for this year's cons.  I figured I would show off my hat since it is complete and looking rather spectacular if I do say so myself!

Here is the half way point:

But it was missing something so I went back and embellished some more.....to make this:

I just love how this hat came out!  And, good news for all the people who have been asking, I will be posting custom top hats as items for sale in my Etsy shop very soon!

TARDIS fez and TARDIS top hat

So, we are going to be heading to Louisville next weekend to show off our amazing Doctor Who outfits AND to meet Matt Smith (for all non-Whovians, he is the 11th Doctor)!!!!  SO we decided to make a TARDIS fez to give to the brilliant Matt Smith.  Thanks to Tally's Treasury for giving us an awesome jumping off point for our fez!  Here are pics from the process....

I let my daughter decorate it because it is SOOOO much better for her to give something she made!

I also need a TARDIS top hat for my ensemble because hats are sort of my thing, so here is the beginning of that as well!

I still want to add some more feathers and I need to attach it to a headband, but other than that, I am SO happy with how it turned out!!
